Where Have You Been

“Clara arrives, unannounced, at the doorstep of Brian. Years ago, Clara and Brian were engaged to be married. But a few weeks before the wedding, Clara called it off and she and Brian broke up, breaking Brian’s heart.”

This short film was a collaboration between Writer & Director Colman Hayes, and our company Dog Day Media. Our company really wanted to test our filming & editing skills on a short film, so started looking out for scripts that we could work with.

When Colman brought Where Have You Been to us we knew this was the script for us! It’s simple but so deep. With a script like this, we could really focus on the storytelling and quality of the cinematography in a short like this as it’s only one location.

We filmed the short film over two days in a house in Cork. We shot the film on an Alexa and had very simple lighting to go with the daylight from the windows. The windows had Neutral Density rolls stuck onto them to give us the nice soft daylight.

The piece really came together in the edit where little decisions on timing and angle choice made such an impact. The fracture of a second could produce whole different emotion.

Lastly the music score was a huge part. That really set the mood and pulled together the acting, cinematography, colour grade into one film.
